Get Your Play On!
ArtsSonoma Festival ’10 “imagine” has approved a project of the SRS Youth Ensembles. Titled “Get Your Play On! Putting String Instruments in Peoples’ Hands,” the performance will take place at the Airport Stadium 12 theater lobby on Friday, September 3, 2010, from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. This event is open to all movie ticket holders in the theater at the time of the performance.

A quartet of youth musicians from the Santa Rosa Symphony Youth Orchestra will play repertoire including classical arrangements of movie music. With the group will be professional orchestra musicians and staff who will offer movie-goers the opportunity to handle a string instrument and “play along” (open string and various other simple techniques) as well as listen.

The goal of this project is to elicit curiosity from, and provide a challenge to, movie patrons; some of whom will perhaps touch a violin for the first time. The idea is to show young people that this music is not out of reach; that these are ordinary kids in ordinary clothes playing something vaguely familiar! The experience might inspire an adult to get back to an instrument they once played, or encourage parents to help their children obtain music instruction. It is also a way of bringing classical music to new audiences “where they are.”
Bellissimo! An elegant evening with Italian flair
Invitations to the Symphony’s season-opening, black tie gala on Friday, October 8, are in the mail. Santa Rosa Golf and Country Club is the site for our annual fund-raising dinner and auction. Join us for camaraderie, libations and a menu of seasonal delights. Soprano ensemble Bella Sorella, named vocal Group of the Year by the 2007 Los Angeles Music Awards, will entertain.

The Italian theme echoes the program for Classical Set One, with works by Verdi, Paganini, Respighi and Berio being performed on October 9, 10 and 11 under the baton of Bruno Ferrandis.
Ushers Needed
Santa Rosa Symphony is seeking volunteer ushers for the upcoming season which runs from October 9-11, 2010 through May 7-9, 2011. Regular ushers commit to seven concerts for either Saturday, Sunday or Monday performances. Substitute ushers are needed as well. A 2-hour training session is REQUIRED for all ushers. There are two training times to choose from: Saturday, September 11 at noon or Saturday, September 25 at noon at the Wells Fargo Center for the Arts. This is a wonderful opportunity not only to support the Symphony, but also to hear and experience exceptional music. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer usher, or have questions, please call (707) 546-8742.
