In January 2006, Argentinean pianist Ingrid Fliter was announced as the recipient of the 2006 Gilmore Artist Award. Only the fifth pianist to have been so honored, the Gilmore Artist Award is made to an exceptional pianist who, regardless of age or nationality, possesses broad and profound musicianship and charisma and who desires, and can sustain, a career as a major international concert artist.
Born in Buenos Aires in 1973, Fliter began her piano studies in Argentina with Elizabeth Westerkamp. In 1992, at the suggestion of Martha Argerich, she moved to Europe where she continued her studies with Vitalj Margulis at the Musikhochschule fur Musik in Freiburg and subsequently with Carlo Bruno in Rome and at the Academy Incontri col Maestro in Imola under the leadership of Fanco Scala and Boris Petrushansky. She has also participated in master classes with Leon Fleischer, Alexander Lonquich and Louis Lortie and receives ongoing musical support and artistic advice from Zoltan Kocsis.
Fliter began playing public recitals at the age of eleven and made her professional orchestra debut at the Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires at the age of 16. Already the winner of several Argentine competitions, she went on to win first prizes at the Cantu International Competition and the Ferruccio Busoni Competition in Italy and in 2000 was awarded the silver medal at the Frederic Chopin Competition in Warsaw.
Fliter has performed with orchestra and in recital at many of the major concert halls worldwide including the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Suntory Hall in Tokyo, Liszt Conservatory Hall in Budapest, Philharmonia in St. Petersburg, Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, Alte Oper in Frankfurt, Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi in Milan, Grosses Festspiele-Haus in Salzburg and the Kölner Philharmonie in Cologne. Her appearances with international orchestras include engagements with the Berlin Symphony, Netherlands Philharmonic, Hungarian National Philharmonic, St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra, Guiseppe Verdi Orchestra of Milan and the National Symphonic and National Philharmonic Orchestras of Buenos Aires. Fliter has also performed at the La Roque D’Antheron, Prague Autumn and Pianistico Internazionale Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli festivals among others and participated in several of “The World Pianist Series” in Tokyo with such renowned pianists Alfred Brendel, Maurizio Pollini and Martha Argerich.
Fliter made her United States debut as the featured soloist on a tour with the Warsaw Philharmonic under the baton of Kazimierz Kord in January/February 2002. During the tour she performed at many of the major concerts halls on the East Coast including the Kennedy Center and Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center. She has also appeared in recital at the Kennedy Center as well as at the National Gallery and Corcoran Gallery in Washington, DC. She made her major American orchestra debut with the Atlanta Symphony, Donald Runnicles conducting, in January 2006, just days after the announcement of her Gilmore Award, and in March 2006 replaced Martha Argerich for concerts with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Charles Dutoit conducting. Additional engagements in the United States included recital and concerto appearances at the Gilmore International Keyboard Festival in Kalamazoo, Michigan and at the Miami International Piano Festival in May 2006.
During the 06-07 season, Fliter made concert debuts at the Hollywood Bowl and the Caramoor and Chautauqua Festivals, with the Detroit and Columbus symphonies and the National Arts Centre Orchestra, and recital debuts in San Francisco, Chicago, New York at Carnegie Hall and London at Wigmore Hall.
Live performances of Fliter performing works by Beethoven and Chopin at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam as well as a DVD of a recital at the Miami International Piano Festival are available on the VAI Audio label.
